Solid Wall Segments

In the StatiCAD-Yigma program, drawing walls as a single piece along the axis without splitting at room intersections, and having the program split the wall by doors and windows (without splitting at room intersections) is a correct solution in terms of code criteria.

EXPLANATION:

TDY 2007 5.3.3. Shear Stress Calculation

The calculation of shear stresses created by the earthquake design load parallel to the horizontal joints of walls is performed as described in this section.

5.3.3.1 - The relative shear rigidity of solid wall segments between door or window openings on each wall axis of a masonry building shall be calculated from the expression kA/h.

Here, A is the horizontal cross-sectional area of the solid wall segment, h is the smallest of the heights of the openings on both sides of the solid wall segment. If the wall cross-section is rectangular, k = 1.0; if the wall has end elements or if there is a perpendicular tooth or buttress wall at the end of the wall, k = 1.2 shall be taken.

From this statement, it is understood that: The shear calculation is based on "solid wall segments between openings." Therefore, walls should be divided by door and window openings, not by room intersections. The program handles this division automatically and correctly according to the code requirements.
