Considerations in New Masonry Building Design

Within the scope of TBDY 2018, the main points to be considered in the new masonry building design are briefly listed.

- TBDY2018 regulation is selected in the Project General Settings Regulation Selection Tab. For the new building, uncheck the "This project is an inspection and/or retrofit project of the existing building" box. When unchecked, no performance report is given, and the wall security number defaults to 2 in the wall properties window (changed if necessary)

-Select earthquake parameters and building type on the TBDY2018 page. According to the building type, the program automatically selects the R and D coefficients according to the regulation tables. As a building type, a masonry building with vertical beam that meets the requirements of article 11.5.5 of the enclosed masonry regulation, while a reinforced masonry building is a building in which reinforcements are passed through the vertical holes and horizontal joints of the bricks.

-Engineering calculation preferences are made on the Method1 and Method2 pages.

- In the Material Tab, the concrete class must be at least C25, the reinforcement class S420 must be selected.

-Load Coefficients to be used for Non-earthquake Compressive Stress Controls are changed to be 1.4G+1.6Q in the Load Combinations Tab.

-Include Vertical Beam Strength into Wall Strength checkbox is activated in the Other Options tab.

-While drawing walls or changing their properties, wall material values must be taken in accordance with the regulation in the Static/Material tab. In order to facilitate obtaining values in accordance with the regulation, one of the ready-made materials can be selected by clicking the TBDY2018 Materials button, or a new material can be defined with the form that helps to obtain values by automatic interpolation from the regulation tables with the help of the new/delete/edit wizard.

-Wall material security number is taken as 1 when examining existing (built) floors or walls. For new walls, it is taken as 1.75 for gas concrete and 2.0 for other materials.

-Wall width minimum values are entered by looking at the table 11.4 in the regulation. A minimum wall thickness of 24 cm should be given for the brick wall.

- According to the regulation, it is obligatory to use reinforced concrete flooring in masonry buildings (except for the reinforced panel system). (Article 11.3.7)

- In buildings consisting of unreinforced masonry buildings, reinforced masonry buildings, encircled masonry buildings and reinforced panels, the effective stiffness of the load-bearing wall shall be determined by reducing 50% of the gross stiffness. (Item 11.3.5) To achieve this, the Wall Properties>Analysis Options>Wall Stiffness Factor>Use special value for stiffness factor checkbox is selected and a coefficient of 0.5 is written for all walls.

-The geometry of the building is created and analyzed according to the architectural project.

- If there are insufficient walls as a result of the analysis, the amount of walls in the insufficient direction of the building can be increased, the wall thicknesses in the insufficient direction can be increased, vertical beams can be added into the insufficient walls, and a reinforced wall solution can be started.
